Talking Kansas, puppy proposals and rustic chic with real bride Kailey
Kailey looked just breathtaking in our Ellis Bridals wedding dress style 19033.
Beyond her beautiful big day look, we love getting to know the girls behind the dresses and Kailey’s love story is truly one for the ages. Just wait until you hear the wedding proposal..!
“My husband and I grew up in the same, small, farm town outside of Kansas City. We were both born and raised there. Our parents even went to the same high school together and had remained friends, so we had been around each other our whole lives, which made it pretty easy when we decided to become more than friends!”
How did you know he was the one?
“I knew Gunnar was the one because he is just like my dad. My family is just my mom, dad and the three girls. Growing up, I saw my dad truly treat all of us girls like princesses and my mother like a queen. I never thought I would ever find a man that could fill his shoes, but I did. Gunnar, since our first date, has treated me with such respect and given me an unconditional love, just like my daddy did.”
How did he/you propose?
“He proposed with a puppy! Yes, a puppy! We are both huge animal people and had just gotten a new pup together. I had just moved back from college and was living with my parents, so our puppy stayed at his house, and that killed me! I was taking a nap at his house one afternoon and I heard our pup (Charlie) hop up on the bed and sit next to me. I opened my eyes and he had a ribbon tied around his neck, with a ring attached, and a note that said “Will you be our family forever?” After that, Gunnar grabbed my hand, stood me up, got down on one knee, and the rest is history!”
When are where did the big day take place?
The big day took place on April 23rd, 2016 at a venue in Platte City, MO called Eighteen Ninety. It is an old, incredibly beautiful, colonial house on acreage, with a barn and big reception hall!
When did you start planning?
I started planning the day after he asked! My sisters and mom couldn’t wait either, so we got to work as soon as we could!
Where did you get your dress?
I got my dress from Something White Bridal Boutique in Kansas City.
Is that the sort of dress you thought you would go for or was it a surprise?
The dress I got was nothing like I thought I would go for. I wanted a tight fitting dress that showed off my curves, and I went with the flowiest dress I saw. My sister grabbed it off the rack because she loved it, and I remember thinking “I don’t know that I’ll like it, but I’ll try!” And it was instant tears when I tried it on and looked at it in the mirror.
How did you arrive at the ceremony?
The best part of the venue we chose is that the girls are able to get ready in the beautiful colonial home all day! The ceremony was right outside of the door to the home, so I was able to walk straight out onto the porch and down the aisle.
Did you have anything unusual during the ceremony?
We had a unique unity that involved a tree, we both poured individual containers of soil into the pot, and then watered the tree together. This was one of my favorite parts of our wedding because we were able to come home and plant this new tree at our new house together. I can look out the front window every day and be reminded of our love growing as I watch our tree grow as well!
Any unusual games or entertainment?
We had an unusual table game at our reception that everyone loved! Each table chose a team leader to bring their chair out to the dance floor. The DJ would then ask each person to go back to their table and grab something (it could be a heel, a bobby pin, etc). We would pull a few chairs away while they ran to get their items, and when they got back it was a race for who could get a seat! It really got our guests in the mood to let loose!
What kind of food did you have? Cake?
We had a food truck as our food! We used a company called Blue Moose in Kansas City. They have almost every type of delicious food you could ever imagine and their food trucks can be seen downtown for every big event! We chose two options of burgers/fries, as well as chipotle chicken tacos with lime rice. We also had a cake and some cupcakes for our guests!
What tips do you have for new brides picking their wedding dress?
Try on all types of dresses, even if they aren’t what you think you may like! It’s also okay to disagree with the people you brought dress shopping with you. It is YOUR day and whatever dress YOU feel beautiful in, get that one!
What was your favourite moment from the day?
Seeing Gunnar for the first time. We met secretly on the side of the house. Nicole had us reach out, grab each other’s hands, and then she told us to look. We both cried like babies! I will never, ever, forget that moment.
